The St. Paul Board of Education tackled multiple items during its February meeting, with the hiring of a new secondary principal for the district being among the most pressing.

Due to extreme dry conditions and projected winds, Howard County’s fire departments have declared a county-wide burn ban. The ban is to remain in effect until further notice.

River finally thawed. As of Monday morning, the reading is 265 cubic-feet-per-second (cfs). The Middle Loup River is fluctuating, with a reading of 1,710 cfs. The North Loup River has dropped quite a bit since it thawed and is now running 1,240 cfs. The geese have really arrived this past week.

Farwell’s sports history will be honored in a special exhibit at the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame in Lincoln during the month of March as part of March Madness. Sixty years ago in March of 1956, undefeated Farwell valiantly but unsuccessfully, dueled it out 50-38 with undefeated Holstein, for the Class E Nebraska Boys State Basketball Championship. The school year of 1955-56 for Farwell produced a varsity team of 13-1, a reserve team of 12-2, and a girls volleyball team of 11-0.

The family of Vange Markvicka Obermiller would like to thank everyone for their kind words of support at our time of loss. A big thank you to those who dropped food by and for the beautiful flower arrangements for her funeral. We would like to thank the altar society and American Legion Auxiliary Society ladies for their programs. Mom was honored to be a member of both. Lastly, a huge thank you to all the church ladies for the desserts and salads and for serving a wonderful meal.

Howard County Senior Citizens want to thank everyone who attended or helped support our recent soup luncheon. We considered it a great success. Thanks to all who donated or helped in anyway. We are truly blessed to be in such a great community.

Wayne State College included 1,300 students on the dean’s list for exemplary academic achievement during the Fall 2025 semester. Students listed on the dean’s list are full-time undergraduate students who have achieved a GPA of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale for the semester. An asterisk (*) denotes a 4.0 GPA for the term.
