Centurions earn hardware at state speech championships

The Centura speech team returned from the Nebraska School Activities Association (NCAA) Class C-1 State Speech Championships with four medals and an overall team sweeps placing of eighth. The Duet Acting team of Lauren Suntych and Ella Simon took home a silver from the state contest, coming in behind the Louisville team of Dayton Carlson and Easton Fiala and ahead of Kolten Settje and Emma Sohler of Laurel- Concord- Coleridge.

Lower Loup designates water quantity management sub-area

On March 1st, Lower Loup Natural Resources District (NRD) Water Management Area 19— which is composed of the Lower Loup NRD area south of the main stem of the Loup River in southern and eastern Howard County, in the Palmer area of northwestern Merrick County, and in part of Nance County— was designated as a Water Quantity Management Sub-Area.

Bed Head selected for statewide program

Bed Head Coffee Company will be featured on the Nebraska Passport Program later this spring. An annual program of the Nebraska Tourism Commission aimed at “help[ing] travelers discover Nebraska’s hidden gems,” the Nebraska Passport released a list of its of seventy 2025 passport stops-including museums, parks, restaurants, retail stores, coffee shops, and more-earlier this year.

SRT budget questioned by Howard County board

Several items made up a busy regular meeting of the Howard County Board of Commissioners last week. Among many other items, the board heard an update on the Howard County Communications Center’s potential takeover of Nance County dispatch services, an update on the new county roads building at the county fairgrounds, approved Father Alex Borzych as a new member of the Howard County Medical Center Board, and discussed the management of the Central Nebraska Special Response Team’s budget, changes to county employees’ union representation, and the county’s designation as a “hub zone” for “new market opportunities for business growth” by the Nebraska office of the United States Small Business Administration (SBA).
