It is a brand new day

Body
What a difference a few hours can make. With every new dawn, we are given a new lease on life. In fact, it’s as if each new day brings with it all of the fresh possibilities of a new creation; with new eyes prepared to see it afresh and a revitalized spirit bursting with newfound energy and fresh hopes. But of course, the flip side of this is that we often find ourselves feeling tired and worn out at the end of a long day, and we tend to view things with jaded eyes and resignation as we tire.

We woke up to fog Sunday morning. The river flows were more consistent this week, except for the North Loup River, which has fluctuated more than 500 cubic-feet-per-second (cfs) this past week, with a current reading of 1,500 cfs. The South Loup River is down to 220 cfs, compared to 247 cfs last week. The Middle Loup River is also down, with a reading of 994 cfs, compared to last week’s 1,850 cfs. The geese are quite entertaining. The new ones are receiving their flying lessons. You wonder sometimes if they will miss the tree or my yard fence. Somehow, they do. Sunday morning, I think they were having voice lessons, or they are going through the teenage stage of high-pitched honks.

Linda Rasmussen of St. Paul was one of thirty- five recipients of the 2015 Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award. Cindy Brummund nominated Rasmussen for the award. She had countless examples of her neighbor coming to her family’s aid in many ways over the years—everything from mowing and watering the yard during hospitalizations, to driving over two hours to pick up their boat with very little notice. “She is always willing to help,” Brummund wrote, calling Rasmussen the ideal “good beighbor.” Rasmussen, who also volunteers at the senior center, was presented the award by Howard County Fair Manager Kevin Jorgensen prior to the Saturday night grandstand entertainment.
