Longtime Washington Post publisher Philip Graham famously said that “Journalism is the first draft of history.” Ever since hearing that line, which is featured prominently at the conclusion of the 2017 film “The Post,” I have taken that belief to heart and, in some ways, have been inspired by it. Not only does it provide reporters a bit of an out, as some reporting can be “rough” for a variety of reasons, but it also illustrates the prominent role that newspapers play in documenting the history of a community, a state, or even, in the case of Philip Graham and the Washington Post, a nation.
