SCHUMACHER HONORED FOR LIFESAVING EFFORTS

DAN SCHUMACHER was presented with a Community Lifesaver Award by the Wolbach Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department at the Wolbach Days Rodeo for his quick actions during a life-threatening incident on May 23rd in which a bolt gun rod penetrated Tom Steenson’s leg, shattering his femur and cutting an artery. Schumacher’s efforts are credited with saving Steenson’s life. Schumacher was led onto the grounds of the rodeo arena after the barrel racing on Saturday evening to play a game with other members of the department, Rick Brown and Bryan O’Connor, after which he was surprised with the award. Pictured during the award ceremony are Brown, Justin Killinger, Claire Landers, Schumacher, Steenson, O’Connor, and Ron Tubbs. “Dan’s a really special man,” said Tubbs when presenting the plaque last week.
WOLBACH SENIOR CITIZENS MEET

The Wolbach Senior Citizens met on June 25th at the Wolbach Community Center with fourteen guests present. Members played thirteen-point pitch. The winners were Paul Nielsen, high; Joyce Berney, low; and Irene Walker, traveling. The Wolbach Senior Citizens will meet again on July 30th at the Wolbach Community Center.

Taken from the files of The Wolbach Messenger Ten Years Ago, 2015 A benefit will be held on Saturday, July 11th, in and around Wolbach for William Meyer, son of Gary and Tanya Meyer of Wolbach, and grandson of Gary and Connie Bader of Palmer and Marvin Meyer of Hickman. He was injured in a roll-over accident that has left him paralyzed from the waist down.
Lukasiewicz updates county board on senior center

During the Howard County Board of Commissioners’ second June regular meeting on June 24th, members of the board heard or gave updates on multiple county projects and voted on the vacation of a one-mile stretch of 8th Avenue, among other items.

One person was taken to Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul following a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 281 and Howard Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. The Nebraska State Patrol investigated the accident. A spokesperson for the State Patrol said the accident occurred around 4:49 p.m. on July 1st. Cynthia Lassen, 53, of Elba was driving at 1999 Buick and Colton Hull, and an 18-year-old of St. Libory was driving a 2000 Dodge truck. The accident occurred when Lassen was attempting a left-hand turn and drove into the path of the pickup. She was transported to the hospital by the St. Paul EMTs.
Delta Kappa Gamma holds June meeting

Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met at 1:00 p.m. on June 19, 2025, at the Venture Center in Central City. Member Mary Helen Fuchs introduced the chapter’s special guests for the day, Birdie Krance of Central City, and speaker, Mickey Creager of Omaha.
ANDERSON RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP

Aidan Anderson, a current Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine Early Admissions Scholar and member of the Class of 2029, has been named the recipient of a Pre-Veterinary Scholarship from the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) Centennial Scholarship Foundation, Inc. The funds from this $750 scholarship have been provided by the NVMA’s Pet Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund, representing contributions made by veterinarians and some of their pet-owning clients as memorials to their beloved patients and pets. These scholarships are awarded to individuals whose academic achievements and leadership skills have proven essential to becoming veterinarians; the funds are meant to be utilized to further develop the traits of caring and compassion, encouraging future veterinarians to grow a deeper understanding of human-animal bonds.
