New owners hope Cushing bar brings back memories A new bar and eatery opened up in rural Howard County towards the end of 2025, promising to give rural residents a place to eat, drink, and converse. In Between Somewhere, located at 517 Center Avenue in Cushing, officially opened its kitchen on December 21st; the bar opened a few days later.

In a press conference at Ol’ Ironsides Barbecue and Banquet Hall in Cairo last Tuesday, December 30th, District 41 Senator Dan McKeon expressed his intention to remain in the legislature, labeling calls for his removal from the body “a political game.” McKeon joined the State of Nebraska’s 109th Legislature as a freshman representative for the 41st District— which includes Howard, Greeley, Wheeler, Boone, Valley, Sherman, and parts of Buffalo and Hall counties— last January. Allegations that he inappropriately touched a legislative staff member at an end-of-session gathering last May have led to calls for his resignation, including from Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen.

Taken from the files of The Wolbach Messenger Ten Years Ago, 2016 Central Valley boys second at Holiday Tournament— The Central Valley Cougar boys fell to Grand Island Heartland Lutheran Tuesday evening fifty-nine to forty-eight at the Ansley/Litchfield Holiday Tournament…Nate Nekoliczak led the Cougars with twelve points, followed by Chase Nordhues with seven, while Rusty Hermsmeyer, Connor Wood and Daltyn Rother each had six points. Cougar girls second at Holiday Tournament— Grand Island Heartland Lutheran picked up their sixth win of the season as they defeated Central Valley forty-seven to forty-two in the championship game of the Ansley/Litchfield Holiday Tournament on Tuesday, December 29th…Central Valley was led in scoring by Shelby Behnk, Sidney Wood, and Jadie Rother with nine points each.

Jack Higgens at Lake of the Woods reports that the official National Weather Service gauge registered .35 of an inch of moisture during December… The month started out cold but ended up mild. The high for the month was sixty degrees on December 26th. There were five days when the temperatures fell below zero with December 9th the coldest at negative eight degrees.
