At Gibbon on Thursday the St. Paul Wildcat women amassed their highest team total of the year with ninety-nine points, but were just edged for the team championship by Centura’s 107, with Shelton placing third with eighty-three.
At the eleventh hour, St. Paul Head Golf Coach Rick Peters pulled the plug on last week’s St. Paul Invite, with cool, windy weather not being the type of forecast that the Wildcats wanted when they hosted their home meet.
The Centura girls’ track team has proven during the first half of the season that they have the athletes to pick up points and secure hardware at meets. Last Thursday, the Burgundy and Gray ratcheted their level of competition up a notch and proved that they can not only compete at area meets, but that they can win championships.
Following a string of tough losses, the St. Paul/ Palmer Cats rebounded with three consecutive wins last week as they approach the start of postseason play.
The Elba Bluejays joined ten other teams last week at the Shelton Invite, with the Purple and Gold snagging several pieces of hardware at the Bulldogs’ annual meet. On Thursday afternoon, the Bluejay girls finished the meet tied for ninth place with Heartland Lutheran.
With three of Class B’s top ten teams from last year’s state track meet in attendance, the Central City Invitational provided a true measuring stick as to where St. Paul’s track athletes are at the midway point of the 2023 season. Fortunately, most of the Wildcats were up to the challenge and posted good times and marks during windy conditions on Friday.
Following a big win over Twin River (7-4), the St. Paul/Palmer Cats fell on the losing side of two closely contested games in last Thursday’s doubleheader with Lincoln Christian. The losses bring St. Paul/ Palmer’s record to 4-6 as they pass the midway point of the season.
