Centura Tops St. Paul in Five Sets

Body
The St. Paul Wildcats squared off against their cross-county rivals from Centura last Tuesday evening, with the two Howard County teams needing five sets to decide the top ten matchup. Last week, in front of a large crowd at St. Paul High School, the Centurions tapped into their athleticism to get past the third-ranked Wildcats, with Centura winning the match 25-27, 25-16, 30-28, 7-25, 15-11. “I thought we were out-hustled by Centura in this match, as they made numerous spectacular, athletic saves on defense,” said St. Paul Head Coach Matt Koehn-Fairbanks. “Many of those ended up as easier balls over the net for us that we failed to take advantage of.”

Centurions See Strong Slate of Competition at Ravenna

Body
A crowded field of high-caliber competition may have prevented the Centurions from breaking into the medals last week at the Ravenna Invite, but it didn’t stop the Howard County harriers from logging a series of strong performances on some hilly terrain. Thursday afternoon, on the north side of Ravenna, seven members of the Centurions’ team combined for a thirteenth-place finish in the Bluejays’ meet, which was staged at the Ravenna Golf Course. That finish was the result of the team scoring 143 points, putting them ahead of three other squads – Palmer, Ravenna, and Sandhills/Thedford – competing in the sixteen-team field. Centura’s Cole Callahan hit the finish line first for the Burgundy and Gray. Despite the heat and humidity, the senior completed the course in 22:28.10 for forty-second. Not far behind Callahan were Zavery Jensen and Jack Hadenfeldt, with the two Centurions placing fiftieth and fifty-fourth, respectively. Jensen tackled the course in 23:04.90, while Hadenfeldt came into the chute in 23:23.90.

When the St. Paul Wildcats reported to preseason camp, the cupboard appeared to be anything but empty. However, four weeks into their 2022 campaign, the rigors of Class C-1 football in the heart of the Cornhusker State have started to take their toll on the Blue and Gold, with a rash of injuries changing the composition of the Wildcats’ crew on the field and altering their expectations for the season.

Centurions Storm Past LPC Foes

Body
The Centura volleyball team continued to make their case for why they are one of the top teams in the LouPlatte Conference last week, when the Burgundy and Gray swept a pair of conference opponents on their home court. On Thursday night, the Centurions welcomed in Ord and Wood River, and quickly disposed of both, with the Howard County kids cruising past the Chanticleers 25-18, 2518 and then edging Wood River 25-17, 25-22. Midway through the Centurions’ first set against the Chanticleers, the Burgundy and Gray held on to a three-point lead. While Ord went toe-to-toe with their hosts the rest of the way, the Valley County kids could never make up ground in the match, with an ace serve by Centura’s Hope McDonald putting the set on ice.

St. Paul Finishes as Runner-Up at Broken Bow Invite

Body
The St. Paul girls’ golf team has not shied away from tough competition this season. And, after a month of play, the team has had the chance to see many of the state’s top prep golfers, including members of the defending Class C state championship team. Last Tuesday, the Wildcats made the trek up Highway 92 to compete at the Broken Bow Invite. There, St. Paul was dwarfed by the host Indians on the course, but the Blue and Gold still managed to escape Custer County with a runner-up finish.
