Wildcats Return Core Group of Starters

Body
The St. Paul Wildcats may have started last season on a five-game skid, but by the end of their 2021 campaign, the Blue and Gold had managed to find their footing and were able to finish the year with a nearly even record under their belts. This season, the locals are hoping that they can capitalize on the lessons they learned and the improvements that they made during the second half of last year to snag some additional wins, net a conference title, and maybe even make some noise in the postseason. “While we lost our lone senior and will need to find a way to replace her RBIs and leadership, this year’s team has a great core group of players returning, and I know that they are looking for a stronger start to their season,” noted St. Paul Head Coach Kali Volk, who is entering her sixth year at the helm of the Wildcats’ program. The former Midland University player acknowledged that replacing the firepower that last year’s single senior, Amber Kosmicki, had brought to the plate would be a daunting task, but the coach said that there was plenty of experience returning. That fact, according to Volk, should be encouraging for fans of St. Paul softball.

DCB Falls to Malcolm in State Title Tilt

Body
Dannebrog-Cairo-Boelus’s (DCB) third straight championship run fell short during last Wednesday’s American Legion Class C Senior Playoff final against Malcolm. After a back-andforth, explosive first inning at River Park in Wisner, Malcolm rallied to an 11-3 victory and was able to secure their second state championship in six seasons. “We faced them twice [during the high school season] and beat them both times by one run,” DCB Coach Joe Noakes said of Malcolm. “They’re a great team with great kids and great coaches. It was a good battle between two really good teams.” Malcolm had swept their way through the tournament in Wisner, outscoring opponents 19-11 and edging past DCB in the second round, 2-1. Needing two consecutive wins to claim the state championship, the DCB Seniors knew they had a mountain to climb. That climb got off to a rocky start last Wednesday night when Malcolm posted four first inning runs on three hits and a pair of walks.

Malcolm Creeps Past DCB in Second Round at State

Body
For just the second time in three seasons, the Dannebrog-Cairo-Boelus (DCB) Seniors were handed a loss. In the second round of the 2022 Nebraska American Legion Senior Class C State Tournament, Malcolm edged out DCB in a defensive battle, 2-1, sending the locals to the bottom half ofthe bracket. Both pitching staffs and defenses came to play on Sunday night. Through four innings, DCB and Malcolm combined for just two total hits and entered the fifth with no runs onthe board. Bosten Caspersen was nearly perfect in the game and looked like he would make it through the fifth inning unscathed. After striking out the first two batters he faced, Malcolm’s Maddox Meyer kept the inning alive with a two-out single to center field. Up next in the Malcolm batting order was their cleanup hitter, Connor Zegar. Zegar watched one pitch go by before belting a double into the DCB outfield, bringing Meyer home for the game’s firstscore. DCB was retired in order in the bottom of the inning but held onto that one-run deficit with three quick outs in the top of thesixth. Time was dwindling for the defending state champions and, in the top of the sixth frame, they put together their best performance of the night. Nolan Hurt and Barrett Fries hit consecutive singles to begin the bottom of the sixth inning. With runners on first and second, Bryce Gorecki grounded into a double play, but Hurt was able to make his way homeand even up the score. Tanner Simdorn was called to the pitcher’s mound in the game’s final inning and Malcolm put him in a jam right away. After a leadoff walk, Meyer doubled to center field, putting runners on first and third. Afterwards, Zegar made his second big play of the night when he hit a grounder to Carter Noakes at shortstop, driving in his team’s secondrun of the game. However, with two runners in scoring position, Simdorn struck out the next two batters he facedand forced Jason Clarke to fly out to center field, to keep his team within a run in their final plate appearances.
