Centurions Fall to Wildcats After Topping Bison, Chants

Body
Facing a two-set deficit, the Centura volleyball team was not going to back down, especially not in the finals of the LouPlatte Conference volleyball tournament opposite their cross-county rivals from St. Paul. Last Thursday night, on the hardwood at Wood River Rural High School, the Centurions, aided by three straight service points from sophomore Carlie Sokol, erased a late-deficit in the third set of the best-of-five match; however, an error and a blocked shot by senior Sydney Davis ended up causing the Centurions to fall to the Wildcats 25-18, 25-9, 25-23. Sokol had a big game for the Centurions, with the sophomore registering a lone kill, eight service points, four aces, and two blocks in the match. The Burgundy and Gray were led on the attack by Taya Christensen and Sydney Davis, who finished with eight and seven kills, respectively. Christensen also had a pair of service points, while Davis had two aces in the match. Kyra Wooden, the Centurions’ setter, had a kill, two blocks, and finished with a pair of service points, while Hope McDonald also contributed on the attack with a solo kill and a single block. Davis led Centura’s defense at the net with four blocks in the match. Thursday night’s loss to the Wildcats, which was just the fifth of the year for the fourth-rated Centurions, capped off a dominating tournament run, which featured the Howard County kids topping both Central City and Ord in the opening rounds.

Wildcats End Season at Districts

Body
The St. Paul cross country team had plenty of practice tackling hills on the cross country course this season; however, last week, at the District C-4 Championship, the course was far from hilly. That lack of topographical deviation, howling winds, and the presence of a horde of talented runners, proved to be too many obstacles for the Wildcats to overcome in their quest to extend the postseason. St. Paul fell short of qualifying a single runner for state last week, and ended up closing out their 2022 campaign.

Thede, Hymer Lead St. Paul at LPC Invite

Body
Coming into their fall campaign, the St. Paul Wildcats’ boys’ cross country team had a big goal for the season. Following four straight years of securing the Lou-Platte Conference title on the cross country course, the Wildcats were hoping to extend that streak to five. However, last week, on the course at the St. Paul Country Club, the Blue and Gold, despite recording some strong times and impressive finishes, fell short of achieving that goal, with a host of talented runners keeping the Wildcats from the top spot on the leaderboard.

Beavers Spoil Bluejays’ Homecoming

Body
It was a special day in Elba last Friday, and, amid all the pomp and circumstance surrounding the homecoming festivities at Elba High School, the Purple and Gold were hoping to find the means necessary to squeak out a homecoming victory. While the Bluejays managed to get on the board early during their afternoon contest, which featured the Howard County kids hosting St. Edward, the Beavers’ rushing attack proved too powerful for Elba to curb. St. Edward amassed almost 300 yards on the turf last week en route to a 67-18 win, the Beavers’ third of the season. From the first whistle, St. Edward was on a roll, with the visitors scoring twenty-two points in the first quarter and then, in the second stanza, racking up twenty-six more. During that same span, Elba breached the goal line twice, with the Bluejays scoring once in both the first and second quarters.

St. Paul Secures Second Victory

Body
There is no denying that the St. Paul Wildcats have taken their lumps this season on the gridiron. However, after navigating a fivegame stretch that featured ranked opponent after ranked opponent, the Blue and Gold were still rearing to go Friday night, and used that energy to pick up a thirty-five-point victory over Fairbury.

Wildcats Challenged by Tough Opponents

Body
The St. Paul Wildcats opened a busy week on the hardwood with a hard-fought 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 15-17 loss to Columbus Lakeview. Jenna Jakubowski had a career-high twenty-nine kills in the match, and added two blocks and two aces. She also led the team with twenty-five digs. Clara Kunze added thirteen kills and twentytwo digs and tied Rowynn Hansel for a team-best four ace serves. Maya Becker was also in doubledigits in kills with eleven. Gracie Mudloff and Gracie Kelley each had four kills and Mudloff was the top blocker with six. Natalie Poss finished with fiftyone assists and added sixteen digs. Libero Jess Vetick picked up twentythree digs and added an ace and Harlee Behring had fifteen. “This was an extremely long match with a lot of good rallies and highpowered volleyball,” said St. Paul Head Coach Matt Koehn-Fairbanks. “Unfortunately, we made a few too many errors and were playing from behind much of the night. I was proud of how we fought back in the fourth set after falling behind 20-14 and again in the fifth set when we were down 10-6.

St. Paul Swept in District Finale by NEN

Body
St. Paul’s postseason run was cut short last Friday. The Wildcats ended their season with back-toback losses to Northeast Nebraska (NEN) and a 20-11 overall record. Vying for a spot in the 2022 NSAA State Softball Championships, the two squads met on the diamond in Wisner for a best-of-three game series. The Vipers took the opening game in walk off fashion, 9-8, then needed just five innings to punch their ticket to state with a 10-2 victory in the final contest.

Centurions Keep Pace at Conference

Body
The strength of the LouPlatte Conference was on full display last Tuesday afternoon, when runners from all nine conference schools converged on the St. Paul Country Club for the conference’s annual meet. Amid that talented field of runners were six members of the Centurions’ cross country team, all of whom made strong showings amid a crowded field.
