The Elba Bluejays got the feeling of Friday football for the first time in four years last week. After a multi-year hiatus from fielding a varsity team, the Bluejays returned to the six-man ranks late last month, hosting High Plains Community Schools in their season opener.

The Centura-Central Valley Diamonds kicked off their 2026-2027 campaign with a bang, winning five consecutive games in three days. In a triangular with Fillmore Central and York last Thursday, the Diamonds powered past the Panthers 8-5 behind a standout pitching performance by Calleigh Sundberg.

A red-hot start, followed by some timely defense, helped the St. Paul softball team to an opening day 7-4 victory over O’Neill on the Wildcats’ home field last Thursday.

It is a year of change for the Centura football team. After a 3-6 finish in Class C2 last season, the Centurions are moving to the eight-man ranks, competing in Class D-1 for the first time, with eight returning starters and a trio of newcomers expected to make a big impact on the gridiron.

The St. Paul Wildcats bring an experienced group to the links this season that has one goal in mind for 2026-2027: improvement.

Last year, the Elba volleyball team finished with a record of 13-16, their best mark since the 2008-2009 season. This fall, with four seniors returning to starting roles, seventh-year head coach Sarah Morrow thinks her team has what it takes to improve on that number.

Four golfers are ready to hit the links this season for Centura as the Centurions attempt to qualify for the NSAA State golf championships for the first time since Jenny Deines won the Class B title in 1997.

After making their first state tournament in program history last season, the Centura softball team has once again formed a co-op with Central Valley High School and has the talent and hunger to get back to the state’s biggest stage.

For the first time since 2022, the Elba Bluejays will field a varsity football team. While no starters remain from that team to make their return, the Purple and Gold will feature a senior-led team and will compete in the Class D-6, sixman football.
