Last Tuesday, February 13th, the Howard County Commissioners spent around the first hour of a several- hours-long meeting holding public hearings, among them a hearing revisiting the prospect of placing a Verizon communications tower west of Cushing, a hearing regarding amendments to county odor footprint ordinances, and a hearing for the opening of gravel and hauling bids.

PLATTE VALLEY/TWIN LOUP STRIKE TEAM

THE PLATTE VALLEY/TWIN LOUP STRIKE TEAM recently completed a Red Card certification class put on by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s training division. Wildland fire behavior, fire suppression tactics, and life/property protection strategies were a few of the concepts participants learned and put into practice over the twenty-two hours of class time and ten hours of hands-on application. The volunteers in this task force and local departments are dedicated to the protection of life, property, and the environment. Departments that attended include Boelus, Cairo, Chapman, Dannebrog, Elba, Farwell, Grand Island Rural, Loup City, St. Paul, and Wood River. Members of the striketeam said they were thankful to the instructors from the state fire marshal’s office from across the state, as well as to the Janulewicz family of Boelus for the use of their land during hands-on training.

DOANE UNIVERSITY

A total of 289 students, more than a third of all students enrolled on Doane University’s Crete campus, made the university’s fall 2023 Dean’s List.

To make the Dean’s List, undergraduate students enrolled on the university’s Crete campus must earn a grade point average of 3.70 or higher in at least twelve graded credits during the semester. Local students to be named to the dean’s list included Bladen Garcia and Tanner Simdorn of Dannebrog and Brenden Knapp and Jackson Seward of St. Paul.

World Day of Prayer to be observed in St. Paul

World Day of Prayer is to be held on Friday, March 1, 2024, at noon, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 2306 Howard Avenue, St. Paul. The theme for the day is: Bear with each other in love, despite all difficulties and oppression. The World Day of Prayer brings women of different races, cultures, and traditions together in fellowship, understanding, and action throughout the year; in particular, however, everyone is welcome to pray together at noon.

LETH: Jason and Courtney (Bierbaum) Leth of St. Paul are parents of a son, Bronson Ray. He is welcomed home by a brother, Grayson. Bronson was born on February 13, 2024 at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. He weighed 7 lb., 3 oz. and was 21 inches long. Grandparents are Duane and Lisa Bierbaum of St. Libory and Gary and Karen Leth of St. Paul. Great grandparents are Betty Wichmann and Joyce Bierbaum, both of St. Libory.

A St. Paul woman who died a little over a year ago has left a portion of her late husband’s combined estates to a community foundation to be formed in St. Paul. Bob and Betty Roemmich were longtime residents of St. Paul, where he had a dental practice and she was his assistant. She died January 10, 2013, and he died October 15, 1991. The portion of the estate she left to charity is valued at $1.5 million…The balance of the $1.5 million [minus about $61,500 earmarked for other charitable purchases] will go to a community foundation to be formed in St. Paul.

ST. PAUL ROBOTICS TEAM

ST. PAUL ROBOTICS TEAM was in action at Columbus High School on February 10th for their last regular season tournament of the year. Several St. Paul robots made it into the top ten after qualifying matches. When finals were over, St. Paul had one team on the winning alliance: Kolton Williams and Kaleb Kaslon scored a 341, a new high score for the year from any robot in the division. Kolton and Kaleb were also presented with the “Honor Award” for their interview and engineering design. The Wildcats will end their robotics season at the U.S.

The cold night on Friday put some ice back in the flow of the river. The South Loup River was running at 197 cfs and the Middle Loup River was at 1,880 cfs as of Sunday morning. Saturday was a day on which we saw several hundreds of geese in and by our big pond.
