Central Valley went the distance, and, ultimately, the Cougars got the job done. On Saturday, on the court at Elba High School, the Cougars battled in a pair of five-set matches during the final two rounds of the Goldenrod Conference Tournament.

The St. Paul Wildcats had strung together eight straight LouPlatte Conference championships heading into this season, and last week, the Blue and Gold had hit the court hoping to extend that streak to nine.

It had been nearly thirty years since the last time that a traveling trophy had been hoisted following a football game between Centura and St. Paul.

Despite having picked up their third victory of the season against Chambers/Wheeler Central the week before, on Friday night, the three-win Tigers were outmatched in every category by their hosts.

The St. Paul Wildcats’ offense came up short of putting points on the board Friday night, but the Blue and Gold was able to lean on its defense to ensure that things didn’t get out of control in the face of one of the team’s most formidable opponents of the season.

The Centura cross country team put together a solid performance at a competitive conference meet last Tuesday. At the Crane Trust near Alda, the Centurions were led by Kasen Webb, who raced to twentieth place with a time of 20:02.98.
