It was just after nine o’clock on Wednesday morning, and the guys in the press room at the Kearney Hub had already sent a text: “Where are the Beacon pages?” The truth: They were late. For years, I had done my best to get the pages of the Elm Creek newspaper to the Kearney Hub by nine o’clock on Wednesday morning.

As of Sunday evening, the South Loup River was running almost the same as last week, 118 cubic feet per second (cfs), and the Middle Loup River at St. Paul was down again this week, with a reading of 1,050 cfs.

Reminder: Mass will be held Saturday, November 19th, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. It is also the Parish Outreach Mass and Thanksgiving Mass. Wine and cheese will be served, so please bring a finger food to share. A special collection will be taken, and the money will be given to a family in need.

CUP Approved for Gun Club, to be Reviewed in Five Years

Last Thursday, November 10th, by unanimous assent of the Howard County Board of Commissioners, JWH Farms, LLC was granted a conditional use permit (CUP) for the operation of the Hornady Gun Club on an almost one-mile-long and quarter-mile wide A-1 zoned tract of land located to the northeast of the intersection of Friend Road and 14th Avenue.

St. Paul FFA Members Attend National FFA Convention

At the end of October, St. Paul FFA members traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to attend the National FFA Convention at Lucas Oil Stadium. The twelve members who attended included Kailee Shreve, Gracie Ackles, Brendan Powell, Zach Hirschman, Natalia Matlock, Abby Hirschman, Kamden Sack, Carly Stepanek, Sidney Gawrych, Beau Paro, Sam Wells, and Cole Brus. They toured the NCAA Hall of Fame, saw the Indianapolis Speedway, and went to a haunted house in Indianapolis. They also attended the Proficiency Award session, which was the contest Madison Hirschman competed in. Madison made it into the top four nationally with her diversified livestock proficiency. She placed second in the nation overall, competing against tough competition. St. Paul FFA also had three members receive the highest degree, called the American Degree. Those three members were Jacob Wells, Tommy Wroblewski, and Tanner Mrkvicka.
