The Dannebrog-Boelus EMTs honored longtime volunteers at their January 11th Christmas party. Treasurer Gerald Blake was presented with a plaque for twenty-five years of service to the department from Captain Bob Carroll. Service plaques were also presented to Wayne Reimers for twenty- five years, Kathy Brokaw for fifteen years, and Renee VanWinkle, who is retiring after eighteen years.

I was very surprised when I checked the river flow of the South Loup and Middle Loup rivers. They both still indicate ice. We have open waters at our house. We also made a trip down to Columbus, and the Middle Loup River had some ice chunks along the bank but was flowing nicely there also. Hopefully, by next week, we will have flow readings. This week, the sky has been full of geese of all sizes and several different kinds. I’m talking hundreds of geese throughout the day. Shawn said he also saw about fifty ducks.

Solar array already producing benefits for HGRPPD

Just under one year ago, on February 17, 2023, ground was officially broken on Howard Greeley Rural Public Power District’s (RPPD) one-megawatt solar array project. Now, General Manager Dirk Dietz says the project is creating energy savings for both the City of St. Paul and the RPPD’s customers across Greeley and Howard counties while offsetting 1,707 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

ELKS LODGE DONATION

THE GRAND ISLAND ELKS LODGE visited Elba Public Schools and St. Paul Public Schools last Wednesday to donate shoes to the students. The lodge provided shoes for any student who might need them. Changes made to delinquent tax list notice

Following the passage of LB727 during the ninety-day first session of the 108th Legislature last year, the state of Nebraska has changed the way county treasurer’s offices must report and publish delinquent tax lists. In a brief interview on Monday, February 5th, Howard County Treasurer Sara Roy said she anticipated her office would “be getting calls” about the change.

Candidates file for public office in county

The office of the Greeley County clerk recently released updated election filings for Greeley County. Incumbent candidates wishing to appear on Nebraska’s primary election ballot in May must file before 5:00 p.m. on February 14th; non-incumbents have until 5:00 p.m. on March 1st to file. All three filings for local offices so far have been made by incumbents.

A memorial was donated to the Wolbach Community Center in memory of Bev Newquist from Glen Kolar. A memorial to the Wolbach Community Center was donated in memory of Bev Newquist from Sue Killinger.

SENIOR CITIZENS

The Wolbach Senior Citizens met on January 31st with thirteen people present. Cards were played, with Dona Ondracek winning high, Dick Berney receiving low, and Roxanne Mostek received traveling. Members wished Paul Nielsen a “Happy Birthday.” The group will meet again on February 28th.
