On Sunday morning, we still have some light rain coming down. When I checked the river flows, the South Loup River had a high reading of 1,070 cfs in the late evening of April 26th. It is down to 467 cfs now.

Governor Dave Heineman recently visited Centura Elementary School to present a special award to not one, but two Centura students. Faith and Hope McDonald each received first place in the Nebraska Department of Agriculture’s 2014 poster contest. They are the daughters of Brent and Amy McDonald of Rockville. Faith, a fourth grader, won first place the fourth- and third-grade division.

POPPY DAY

Wolbach Unit No. 236 will be holding their Poppy Day at the Legion in Wolbach on Saturday, May 4th. Coffee and rolls will be served from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. There will also be a pie raffle.

SENIOR CITIZENS

The Wolbach Senior Citizens met on April 24th, with three tables of pitch played. Winners were Paul Nielsen winning high, Roxanne Mostek receiving low, and Dick Peetz, receiving traveling. The groups next meeting will be on May 29th at 2:00 p.m. at the Wolbach Community Center.

Taken from the files of The Wolbach Messenger Ten Years Ago, 2014 Monday, May 5th will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Wolbach tornado…The tornado struck without warning on Tuesday afternoon and went on a southwest to northeast path through Wolbach’s business district, Methodist church, western residential property, and Hillside Cemetery…Eight People were injured…[Several] businesses [were left] destroyed or needing repairs…Wolbach’s fire department and rescue squad swung into action, with help coming from nearby towns, eight in all. By that night, the National Guard had arrived.
