County board okays CUP for “private” airstrip

Body
The Howard County Board of Commissioners covered a lot of ground at their November 26th regular meeting. A public hearing for a conditional use permit (CUP) for a private airstrip, an update on the Blase feedlot operation’s work to meet Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) compliance schedule, and two moves into executive session took up the majority of the almost four-hour meeting.

Sunday morning, the Middle Loup River is a bit higher than last Friday, while the North Loup River is down. The South Loup River is at 167 cubic feet per second (cfs), the Middle Loup River is at 1,340 cfs, and the North Loup River’s reading is 733 cfs. What I found interesting is that the Middle Loup River at St. Paul overnight went from a low of 1,070 to a high of 1,440 cfs and now it’s on its way down again. I don’t have any idea why it did that.

St. Paul FFA attends national convention

Body
The St. Paul FFA chapter completed a successful trip to the National FFA Convention, where chapter members earned several awards and honors. While at the convention, four members— Gracie Ackles, Matthew Kramer, Layne Baker, and Emersen Hancock—earned a twelfth place (gold) finish in the Environmental and Natural Resources contest. Members competed in a variety of hands-on activities including soil and water testing, species identification, GPS usage, and general knowledge. Just graduated member Sidney Gawrych was a national runner-up in the Environmental and Natural Resources Management proficiency area. To earn her place, Gawrych had to submit a comprehensive overview of her SAE project at Conservation Blueprint and then complete a subsequent interview. Seven members of the chapter completed and earned the requirements for the American FFA degree with two of the members attending the convention in person to receive the award. Aidan Anderson and Zach Hirschman were able to make the trip, while Ahna Jerabek, John Placke, Max Sawnson, Nate Jameson, and Nick Busse were able to earn the award but did not attend. Several other members attended the convention and were able to participate in sessions, tours, and visit the Expo, where they interacted with businesses and colleges. Those members included Josef Kaslon, Cole Brus, Karina Smydra, Jalee Haggerty, Makenzie Shreve, Joel Kaslon, Braden Hirschman, and Bryce Rose.
