Shutting out the media, denying them access, leads to bad results

Body
There’s an old saying about government: “What is said isn’t so, it’s what is so isn’t said.” So that means that someone—maybe a state auditor, maybe a whistleblower, but often a news reporter— needs to dig in and find out what is really happening with our tax dollars. That’s why it was so disgusting to read recently about our “Secretary of War’s” crackdown on access by reporters to the Pentagon.

Staying safe while I snooze

The Ravenna Volunteer Fire Department could have, possibly, saved my life. In my twelve years as a small town newspaper publisher, I have attended my fair share of educational sessions with local fire departments and have taken numerous photographs of kids climbing on the departments’ rigs during Fire Prevention Week.

Notes from camp

Body
Last week, I headed off to camp! I would love to say that my duffle bag was filled with my swim trunks, a flashlight, and all the fixings necessary to make some killer s’mores, but that might paint more of a rosy picture of camp than the one I experienced. Let’s just say that, after only about an hour, I was about ready to call my mom for a ride home! In the middle of October, across the Cornhusker State, fall sports seasons are making the rapid transition from regular-season events to postseason competition.

Empowered and hungry

Body
It had been a minute since I had browsed the candy aisle at the local gas station, so a couple of weeks ago, I decided to peruse and see just what exactly was being sold these days. Me, I am a habitual Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup lover, so I rarely look for anything but that bright orange packaging when it comes to selecting my candy of choice.
