Ten Years Ago, 2013 The St. Paul FFA members competed in the District 8 Livestock Judging Contest at the Valley County Fairgrounds in Ord on Tuesday, March 12th… St. Paul’s team of Marissa Sell, Kelsey Scheer, Cole Scheer, and Jefferson Keller won the senior division… Individually, for the seniors, Jefferson Keller finished second, Kelsey Scheer fifth, Jared Lukasiewicz eleventh, Cole Scheer seventeenth, Marisa Sell eighteenth, and Andrew Costello twenty- fourth. St. Paul Elementary students raised over $7,000 in their recent Jump Rope for the Heart…When the students collect the money, ninety-seven percent stays in Nebraska for research and to help people with heart disease.

Ten Years Ago, 2013 The St. Paul Chamber of Commerce held their annual awards banquet on Sunday evening at the American Legion Hall. Dave Brehm was the master of ceremonies and Reverend Kati Salmons gave the invocation and benediction. Ten community awards were presented. Loup Valley Supply, Inc., owned by Jim and Betty Horky, was named Outstanding Agribusiness. The business began as Ritz Feed in 1967, under the ownership of the Horkys and Clarence Ritz…Paul Scarborough was named Distinguished Volunteer. Scarborough was instrumental in starting the St. Paul Rescue Squad in April 1973 and has been a member since that time. He is currently serving as EMT captian…Dewayne and Colleen Barleen were recognized as winners of the Community Service Award. They were honored for their commitment to the St. Paul baseball program…Brenda Ewers-Nordhues, administrator at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul, was named the winner of the Boss of the Year award. She played a key role in convincing Jack Vetter to build a new facility in St. Paul…The Employee of the Year award was presented to all of the employees of Brehm’s Pharmacy A Dannebrog family was displaced when their home was damaged in a Sunday morning fire. Dannebrog Fire Chief Terry Webb said the fire occurred at the Sandra Meyers home at 424 N. Maple. The alarm was turned in at 10:01 a.m. Webb said the fire started accidentally in the kitchen when a candle was knocked over by a cat…The home’s kitchen was extensively damaged, and the rest of the house had smoke damage. The home was uninhabitable following the blaze. The Dannebrog Fire Department received mutual aid assistance from the Boelus and Cairo fire departments. The Dannebrog-Boelus EMTs were also on the scene.

Compiled from the files of The Phonograph-Herald Ten Years Ago, 2013 Organizers of the Kolache Shoot-Out at Elba on Sunday were pleased with the turnout, as many people took advantage of the sixty-degree weather to take in the event. “We had nearly 600 people sign our guest book,” said Edna Ingerle, organizer of the Kolache Shoot-Out. A big crowd was also reported at the Polka Mass and dinner held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in conjunction with the shoot-out…Susan Rasmussen won the 2013 Kolache Shoot-Out.

A mid-week snowstorm swept across the state during the day on Wednesday and into the night. Wolbach officially received 4.2 inches of snow, which contained 0.27 of an inch of moisture. The snow was accompanied by high winds. Driving was dangerous, with low visibility and icy conditions under the snow. The storm resulted in Greeley-Wolbach Public Schools cancelling school on Thursday. The Wolbach Christmas Concert, which was scheduled for Thursday night, was also cancelled.
