Significant Weather System Impacts Howard County, State

Mother Nature delivered a powerful punch of winter weather last week, with a winter storm causing closures, delays, and travel concerns across the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Hastings early last week announced a Winter Storm Warning would take effect for much of its service area beginning just after midnight on Wednesday, January 18th and continuing into midnight on Thursday.

Call Volumes Increase for St. Paul Fire & Rescue

Over the course of 2022, its 135th year of dedicated volunteer service to the City of St. Paul, members of the St. Paul Volunteer Fire Department and EMS responded to 105 fire calls and 282 ambulance calls according to internal records kept by department Training Officer and Vice President Nathan Becker. The year’s totals mark a notable increase from the seventy- four fire calls and 260 ambulance calls recorded in 2021.

Ten Years Ago, 2013 The Cedar Valley girls defeated St. Edward in the quarterfinals of the Goldenrod Conference Tournament on Tuesday night at Cedar Rapids. They advance to the semifinals on Friday night in St. Paul, where they will meet Palmer at 7:30 p.m. Cedar Valley led St. Edward 10-8, 18-12, and 30-18 at the quarter breaks and won the game 34-22.

Christmas Cheer Has Successful Season

The Howard County Christmas Cheer program for 2022 ended on Friday, December 16th with the distribution of gifts to twenty-three families, including over fifty children from newborn to eighteen. All children up to age eighteen received gifts that were either donated by community members or purchased by the committee. Each received gloves/ mittens and hats that were also donated.
