Ten Years Ago, 2013 (Reprinted with permission from The Greeley Citizen.) The Greeley County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing on Tuesday afternoon at Greeley regarding a special use permit for GGPLC (PST) to operate two evaporative ponds at the Wolbach Foods hog confinement site west of Wolbach…The ponds are used to allow the evaporation of hog effluent, the more liquid content skimmed off waste lagoons where the hog manure is collected from the confinement buildings… In attendance for the applicant included Steve Massman, attorney from Lincoln; Jim Pillen, PST; Jum Bulkley, PST; and environmental consultant Dean Settje of Raymond…After much testimony, Chairman Leo Reilly moved and Board Member Michael Goldfish seconded approving the ponds. The Greeley-Wolbach and North Loup-Scotia school boards are continuing to work toward an interlocal agreement that would allow the students from both schools to attend school together this fall.

Ten Years Ago, 2013 Jim Sidel of St. Paul, state commander of the American Legion, spoke at Wolbach’s Memorial Day services on Monday. Following the services in the auditorium, the crowd gathered at Hillside Cemetery for the twenty-onegun salute and the reading of the role of deceased veterans. The services are sponsored by the local American Legion Post and Auxiliary Unit.

Ten Years Ago, 2013 Sara Paider, St. Paul’s new elementary principal, was introduced to the students at the end of the year activities in the elementary gym on Monday morning. She was accompanied by her son, Leyton, and daughter, Avery.

Ten Years Ago, 2013 A successful pancake feed for the benefit of the Wolbach Community Center was held on Sunday at the center. Ninety-one people were served and $1,092 was raised after expenses. The pancake mix was furnished by Doug and Jo Envoldsen, and the Lutheran church men supplied the syrup. Thirty- three people remained and played bingo. The community club provided the legal document to play bingo. Twenty-two games were played, with a few people winning three games each. Sandy Rother was the bingo caller, and his daughter, Sydney, was the helper…The committee expressed their appreciation to everyone. They noted that the amount owed on the center has been cut by about $20,000 since November. Anyone with ideas about future fundraisers is asked to contact one of the committee members.

Ten Years Ago, 2013 Greeley-Wolbach will have two representatives at the 2013 state speech contest: Bryce Wood and Ryne Donovan. They double-qualified for state, placing first at the district contest in each of their Extemporaneous, Humorous Prose, and Duet events.

Ten Years Ago, 2013 The St. Paul FFA members competed in the District 8 Livestock Judging Contest at the Valley County Fairgrounds in Ord on Tuesday, March 12th… St. Paul’s team of Marissa Sell, Kelsey Scheer, Cole Scheer, and Jefferson Keller won the senior division… Individually, for the seniors, Jefferson Keller finished second, Kelsey Scheer fifth, Jared Lukasiewicz eleventh, Cole Scheer seventeenth, Marisa Sell eighteenth, and Andrew Costello twenty- fourth. St. Paul Elementary students raised over $7,000 in their recent Jump Rope for the Heart…When the students collect the money, ninety-seven percent stays in Nebraska for research and to help people with heart disease.

Ten Years Ago, 2013 Weather permitting, construction work is scheduled to resume the week of March 25th on US-34 in Grand Island between US-281 and South Locust Street, according to the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR). Werner Construction, Inc. of Hastings has the $2,333,693 contract for pavement repair, bridge widening, box culverts, and asphalt overlay on US-34, from US-281 to South Locust Street…Work is anticipated to be completed prior to the start of the state fair.
