Happ-enings

I officially failed as a Junk Jaunter. Last week, in my neck of the woods, there was bumper-to-bumper traffic on roads that may normally only see a car or two a day. Farm sheds and garages were converted into makeshift flea markets, and a patch of grass that is home to the county fair carnival suddenly became inundated with booths and stalls selling all manners of wares. While people come from across the country to participate in Junk Jaunt, I learned long ago that, for many of the locals, Nebraska’s biggest rummage sale is considered to be a burr under their saddles.

St. Paul Board Revisits Discussion on Library Book Policy

Body
A seemingly boilerplate policy passed by the St. Paul Board of Education during the group’s July meeting at the suggestion of the district’s attorneys once again was the focus of discussion during this month’s meeting of the district’s leaders. Last Wednesday night, during the St. Paul Board of Education’s September meeting, members of the board spent almost five minutes revisiting Policy 6037, which the board passed in July, and discussing the ramifications its passage had at the St. Paul Public Library. “There was some concern from the library board regarding Policy 6037,” noted St. Paul Superintendent Adam Patrick during his remarks on the agenda item. “Last week, they had a board meeting that I attended, and I explained to them that, nationally, there were some issues that patrons were bringing to school board members from their school libraries, and [the point of implementing the policy] was to try to make sure that there were some safeguards in place for that.” In July, the board approved a slew of new policies and policy changes. Among those that were added, at the suggestion of the school’s attorneys, was Policy 6037. That policy, which was titled “Selection and Review of Library Materials,” contained several options available to the board, with members of the St. Paul Board of Education ultimately deciding that, per policy, the selection of library materials should be left up to the media specialist and administration.
