Jimmy “Jim” Dean Winfrey
Jimmy “Jim” Dean Winfrey, 90, formerly of Grand Island, died on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at the Emerald Nursing and Rehab Mercy in Omaha.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Gollaher Chapel, with Reverend April Wegehaupt officiating. Burial was in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Apfel Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Jim was born on July 10, 1934, to Ray and Marie Winfrey, at Wolbach. He grew up and was educated in the Wolbach and Grand Island areas. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1953.
Jim was inducted into the Army on August of 1954. He served with the 29th Engineer Battalion oversees. He received his honorable discharge in August 1956.
Jim married Loy Barr on August 22, 1956 at Wolbach. He attended Southeast Community College and graduated in 1958.
He worked for Lutheran Memorial Hospital, lived in Hastings, and worked as plant operations and maintenance director for Hastings Public Schools and then as plant operations director at Saint Francis Medical Center.
He retired from Saint Francis in 1995.
Jim was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Eagles, the Legion, and the Platt-Duetsch.
He is survived by his son, Scott (Cherie) Winfrey of Omaha; daughter, Renea Hogan of Bailey, Colorado; four grandchildren: Ben (Jordan) Hogan of Bailey, Colorado, Ashley (Jeremy) Ertz of Lincoln, Colin Kitson of Lincoln, and Caitlin Kitson of Omaha and great-grandchildren, Rylee and Jordynn Ertz of Lincoln.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Don; sister-in-law, Mary Ann; and son-in-law, Dave Hogan.
