Eugene “Gene” H. Scarborough, 78, of Grand Island, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2025 at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.

Funeral services with military honors were held on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Jacobsen-Greenway- Dietz Funeral Home in St. Paul. Val Killinger offered words of comfort.

Selections included “I Can Only Imagine,” “I Hope You Dance,” and “Amazing Grace.”

Honorary Pallbearers included Tod Heusinkvelt, Travis Heusinkvelt, Devin Herrick, Cayden Smith, Jerry Johnson, Preston Olson, Troy Heusinkvelt, Brady Heusinkvelt, Kelly Faimon, Jordan Heusinkvelt, Andrew Mendyk, Mike Starkey, Gerrod Luhn, Mike Thorton, Mark Garrels, Jim Pursell, Adam Patrick, and Mike Suchanek.

Private graveside services were in the Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.

Eugene was born on May 19, 1947, in St. Paul to Harold and Beulah (Ross) Scarborough. He grew up in Palmer, graduating in 1965. He served in the United States Army. He was united in marriage to Catherine Ham on November 24, 1972 in St. Paul. The couple lived in Grand Island, where they raised their daughter, Joni. Gene was a heating and air technician for Grand Island Furnace and Platte Valley Winnelson in Grand Island. His hobbies included playing cards (especially pitch and pinochle) and attending his granddaughter’s softball games.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter and son-in-law, Joni and Bradley Arnett of Grand Island; grandchildren, Matthew Rollins and Damien Rollins, both of Buffalo, Missouri and Tasha Arnett (Cayden Smith) of Grand Island; great-grandson, Everett James Smith; half-sister-in-law, Ronda (Joseph) Kennedy; halfbrothers- in-law, Dave (Mary) Ham, Mike (Marcia) Ham, Tim (Ellen) Ham, Clayton (Linda) Ham, Cary (Tina) Ham, Randy (Kim) Ham, and Shawn (Stefanie) Ham, step-mother-in-law, Marilyn (Ham) Koehn; and grand-cats, Halo and Cosmo.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Catherine Scarborough; sisters-in-law, Judy Martin, Carol Gilliland, Tina Ross, and Wanda Johnson; half-sister-in-law, Debbie Allen; half-brotherin- law, Rick Ham; and great-nephew, Broedy Starkey.
