JoAnn E. Schwieger, 86, of St. Paul, died peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2025 at Brookefield Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in St. Paul.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at Jacobsen- Greenway-Dietz Funeral Home in St. Paul. Interment was at the Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.

Pastor Nicole Schwartz-Eck officiated.

Linda Pedersen was the eulogist.

Musical selections included “Until We Meet Again,” “On The Wings of a Dove,” and “God Will Take Care of You.”

Pallbearers were Jack Stewart, Larry Smith, Mike Becker, Barry Pedersen, Rick Safarek, and Nathan Becker.

Carl Vang, Dennis Kemper, and Jerry Becker+ were honorary bearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made for later designation.

JoAnn was born on a farm northwest of St. Paul, on March 15, 1938, to Henry and Jennie (Meyer) Becker. She grew up in St. Paul and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1957.

JoAnn was united in marriage to Jerry Verley on November 16, 1957 in St. Paul. Jerry passed away on September 16, 1971. She married Bob Schwieger on June 8, 1973 in Grand Island. Bob passed away on July 18, 1997.

JoAnn was a dedicated member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 119 in St. Paul. She contributed her time taking care of others through her work at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island from November 1978 until October 1997. JoAnn was also employed by St. Paul Cleaners and Jacob’s Café. Her commitment to her community was a reflection of her caring nature.

JoAnn’s memory will be cherished by her son, John Verley of St. Paul; step-son, Lyle Schweiger of Loup City; nieces, Debra (Roy) Rassmussen and Linda (Barry) Pedersen; nephews, Mike (Linda) Becker, Larry (Beth) Smith, and Jack (Janet) Stewart. These loved ones were a significant part of JoAnn’s life and will continue to honor her legacy.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents; step-son, Kevin Schwieger; brothers, Raymond Becker, Lawrence Becker, and Elmer Becker; and sisters, Irene Smith and Berniece Stewart.
