Janice “Jan” K. Derner, 70, of St. Paul, passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul. A celebration of Jan’s life was held on Sunday, December 17, 2023 at the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish Life Center. Honorary Pallbearers included McKenna, Mason, Caleb, Ryder, Will, Cassie, Jared, Jenna, Joel, Amber, Zach, and Braxton. A private inurnment was held in the Elmwood Cemetery at St. Paul. Jacobsen-Greenway- Dietz Funeral Home in St. Paul assisted the family. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designations.
Jan was born on June 28, 1953 in Omaha to James and Betty (Green) Leonard. She attended St.
Ann’s Parochial School through the eighth grade and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1971. She was united in marriage to Ron Derner on December 29, 1999 in Texas. They enjoyed their trips to Missouri and Texas, where they spent time camping and enjoying the great outdoors. Boating and fishing were hobbies they thoroughly enjoyed doing together, as well as attending various school and sporting events. When they weren’t cheering in the stands, you could find Jan out walking her dogs or cleaning.
Those left to cherish Jan’s memory include her husband, Ron Derner of St. Paul; mother, Betty Leonard of St. Paul; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Rob Colgrove of Lincoln; son, Reed Anderson of St. Paul; eleven grandchildren, McKenna, Mason, Caleb, Ryder, Will, Cassie, Jared, Jenna, Joell, Amber, and Zach; four great-grandchildren; sisters and brotherin- law, Linda Snyder of St. Paul, Kathie and Jim Walker of Grand Island, and Debbie and Donny Nealon of Brownsville, Oregon; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mandy Anderson of St. Paul and Al, Angie, and Braxton Brennen of St. Paul.
Jan was preceded in death by her father, James Leonard; stepson, Douglas Derner; stepdaughter, Tammy (Derner) DeLunger McKain; and nephew, Max Walker.
