Remember When
Ten Years Ago, 2013 A successful pancake feed for the benefit of the Wolbach Community Center was held on Sunday at the center. Ninety-one people were served and $1,092 was raised after expenses. The pancake mix was furnished by Doug and Jo Envoldsen, and the Lutheran church men supplied the syrup. Thirty- three people remained and played bingo. The community club provided the legal document to play bingo. Twenty-two games were played, with a few people winning three games each. Sandy Rother was the bingo caller, and his daughter, Sydney, was the helper…The committee expressed their appreciation to everyone. They noted that the amount owed on the center has been cut by about $20,000 since November. Anyone with ideas about future fundraisers is asked to contact one of the committee members.
Twenty Years Ago, 2003 Wolbach’s FCCLA and FFA chapters held their annual Awards Night on Friday, April 11th at the school gym...Erin Sonnek is as a new State FCCLA officer who will represent Region D...Alysa Walch was recognized for her participation in District STAR and for being a district officer this past year. Walch will also represent the Wolbach Chapter as District 11 officer next year...Outstanding member recognition went to #3 FCCLA Member Sara Petersen, #2 FCCLA Member Shawna Evans, and #1 FCCLA Member and Outstanding Junior High Member Annamae Lindsley... FFA awards were presented by their advisor, Jamie Weaver, assisted by Chris Christensen. Recognition was given to individuals who attended State FFA, the presenters who earned a plaque for their presentation at Farm Safety Day, District CDE participants who included Brady Swett (meatsred), Brandon Matlock (ag mechanics-purple), and Seth Christensen (ag mechanics-white), Russell Killinger (ag mechanics- red), Stanley Todorov (ag mechanics-red) Tyson Ondracek (agri-sciencewhite) and Tyler Greek (agri-science-red); State CDE qualifying agriculture mechanics team members who received ribbons include Brandon Matlock (ag structures-blue), Stanley Todorov (ag energy-red) and Seth Christensen (ag environment- white), Russell Killinger (ag machinery- participant), Chris Christensen (meatsred), Brady Swett (meatswhite), and Travis Vitek (swine management-red).
Thirty Years Ago, 1993 The Wolbach Drive In, under the new management of Donna (Mrs. Vic) Anderson, will reopen for business on Saturday, May 1st. The business has been closed for some time. LaFerne (Mrs. Carl) Lange, former operator and owner, had closed the business due to health problems.
The Greeley County Board of Supervisors has designated the Greeley County Courthouse as a smoke-free building as of May 1, 1993.
Forty Years Ago, 1983 Francis Kolar became an eight-gallon donor at the last visit of the Red Cross Bloodmobile to Greeley County at Spalding in March. Jean Peetz reached the two-gallon mark and Reynetta Studley and Jeri Pedersen were both first-time donors.
Pfc. Layne Studley left Friday to return to Fort Carson, Colorado, after spending a fifteen-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Studley, and with other relatives and friends.
Fifty Years Ago, 1973 The W.H.S. Honors Banquet, held Friday evening at the school auditorium, was well-attended by around 200 persons...Winner of the Edsel Wibbels Award was Rick Brown, a senior, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Brown. Presentation of the award was made by Leonard Wibbels and is given to the outstanding high school boy possessing these five qualities: sportsmanship, personality, scholastic ability, keeping training rules, and participation in sports. Named outstanding senior girl and senior boy were Sherrie Whalen and Kevin Kolar, and Debbie Anthoney was honored as the outstanding pep club member.
Sixty Years Ago, 1963 Miss Deanna James and Gary McDonald were crowned queen and king of the May Day teenage student body on Wednesday night. McDonald is a junior and Miss James is a member of the graduating class. James Conway and the Spalding High students were guests of the Wolbach School at the CSA-sponsored event.
Liberal late-April moisture and the calendar have triggered full-scale farm work towards the planting of corn acres, the major crop in the area. The moisture that fell in showers Friday and Saturday was measured at 1.60 inches, with 0.65 falling in afternoon and evening showers Friday. The near-perfect fall was fully utilized, with runoff practically nill due to the newly tilled fields.
Seventy Years Ago, 1953 Gary Marco, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Marco, and Janice Larson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Larson, have been selected to represent Wolbach at the 1953 session of Boys State and Girls State.
A severe wind, which started late Tuesday night and continued through Wednesday, did some damage here. Rain and snow in the amount of 0.20 inches accompanied the wind. Limbs were blown from trees, some television towers were damaged, and several windmills in the country were blown down.
Eighty Years Ago, 1943 Our Boys in the Service— Virgil Berney dropped us a card from Fort Leavenworth and said he and Arnold had arrived safe and sound. They hadn’t gotten their uniforms yet. He and Arnold want to thank all who gave them a farewell dance... Harry Burt arrived home Saturday night from Camp Phillips, Kansas, where he had been stationed since he entered the service in October. He has been given an honorable discharge from the Army because of physical disability and because he is needed in agricultural work...Pvt. and Mrs. Alden Peterson left for California on Friday, where he is stationed, having visited in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Peterson, and sister, Mrs. Verden McIntyre, at St. Paul. Alden, who had poisoning from a burn on his arm, is getting along very satisfactorily...Mr. and Mrs. Ed Allen have received word from their son, Jack, who is in a hospital in Kentucky, that he is getting along nicely.
Ninety Years Ago, 1933 Meet up with Buster, the local “wag” who claims to be the oldest canine in Wolbach, and who perhaps is the oldest in Greeley County and several counties. Buster, who has attained a ripe old age of eighteen years, has been a member of the Robert S. Wilson household in Wolbach for fourteen years... Buster is now in his declining years, weak, helpless, and wheezy. He gazes out on a fading world through shaggy overhanging locks of what was once a fine coat of silky white hair... An eighteen-year-old dog is an exception. Do you know any older?
100 Years Ago, 1923 A thief or thieves stripped the new Ford car belonging to Andrew Wasgren, who resides about nine miles northwest of Greeley. Four tires, two casings, one cushion, coils, jack, pump, and the tools were taken while the car was in the garage. The car was a new one.
On Monday evening, Doris, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bucy, fell through a hole in the haymow and received a dislocated shoulder in the fall. Dr. Adams was called to administer to the little one, and she is now recovering nicely.
110 Years Ago, 1913 There is considerable talk about adding another grade to our schools. This is a good idea, we believe, as our district must pay twenty-seven dollars per year for anyone taking the twelfth grade anywhere else.
News of the Legislature— There will be no election in Nebraska this fall. County officials will hold this time for threeyear terms and an arrangement will be made for the future election of township office.
