She received her education at Wolbach Public Schools and was a 1952 graduate of Wolbach High School. She then attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln where she received a teaching certificate.

She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart and best friend, Robert D. “Sonny” Nealon, on May 20, 1953 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wolbach.
