Art had four distinct careers spanning six decades. Art spent twenty-nine years with IBM managing customer service functions. After earning his Masters in Theology degree from the University of Dallas, Art took a position as the parish administrator of the St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Rogers, Arkansas. Art worked tirelessly managing the various activities required to finance and construct a new church building. The building was dedicated and opened on April 4, 2003, seating 1,600 congregants. Art and his then-wife, Sue, moved to Tigard, Oregon at this time, and Art became a hospital chaplain wanting to put his significant personal experience with grief toward a positive activity by advising others during their time of need. A few years later, Art decided he wanted to be of service to his local diocese and signed up for the diaconate program, at the age of sixty-five. Perhaps a highlight of his life was having his extended family on hand to witness his initiation into the Diaconate of the Portland Diocese. Art served as a deacon for the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Tigard for several years.
